Skovby Natural Oil from the Skovby Care Collection is a vegetable based oil product for wood furniture. This oil product impregnates the wood, creating a protective barrier that helps repel dirt and moisture. We suggest you use this on your oiled furniture regularly to protect and maintain the wood.
This common European wood finish is not see quite as often in the states. However, it creates an almost rustic finish that enhances the natural characteristics of the wood. The oil helps to protect the wood, although it does not seal the wood in the way that a lacquer or varnished finish would.
Using the Skovby Natural Oil is essentially clear, but it can darken the appearance of some woods slightly. Additional layers of oil can darken the appearance more. This does not permanently change the wood color. Please note that there is also a Skovby White Oil available from the Skovby Care Collection. This product can be used to achieve a lighter wood appearance.
Should I oil new furniture?
Oiled furniture can sometimes appear dry at first. It can also have dry spots since the different parts of the wood may absorb oil at different rates. This is natural, and can be evened out with an oil treatment. For these reasons and to increase protection of the wood, you may want to oil the piece when you receive it. In order to keep the wood protected, we recommend that you use this product on your oiled furniture periodically.
How to Apply Skovby Oil
Shake before use. Lightly sand the surface along the grain using a soft sanding sponge (grit 220). Then remove the sanding dust with a clean cloth. If necessary, clean the surface with a cloth well wrung out in lukewarm water added a few drops of clear soap (pH neutral). Afterwards, wipe the surface with a clean, dry cloth. Leave the wood to dry for about two hours before treating it with oil from Skovby Care Collection.
Apply the oil directly onto the cloth and rub it in gently with an uncolored cloth/sponge. After 2-3 minutes, surplus oil needs to be wiped off with a clean, dry cloth. It is very important that this is done while the surface is still wet. It will take the oil up to two days to harden completely and provide maximum protection. Before the oil has hardened it can rub off on clothing. This cannot be washed off.
Allow cloths used for applying oil to dry outside before disposing of them.
Maintaining your Oiled Furniture
For daily cleaning, wipe the furniture with a clean, dry cloth or a cloth well wrung out in lukewarm water (if necessary added a few drops of washing-up liquid per litre of water). Follow by wiping with a clean, dry cloth.
