Easy Ways to Freshen Your Home for 2016

Easy Ways to Freshen Your Home for 2016
Katy  |  01.06.16  |  Design

New Year’s Day makes me crave change. I tend to spend this relaxing holiday at home. This year I looked around my house, and I started to feel a need for a design reset. Maybe it’s the large amount of time I spend inside during the winter, or the fact that I’ve been binge watching “Fixer Upper” on Netflix. Either way, I need some new scenery to get me through the winter and to start 2016 with some happy design karma.

This strong desire for design change got me thinking: How can I freshen the look of my home without breaking the bank or starting a project I’ll never finish? I’m a busy working mom of a toddler with another one on the way, so I have to be realistic.

I dug deep into my bank of knowledge from design school and all of the hours I have spent watching HGTV, and this is what I came up with. . . .

New Accessories & Accents
Introducing a new accent color or trading out old pillows with fresh ones is enough to completely transform the feeling of a space. New lighting, artwork, and/or accessories can make a world of difference as well. Pick colors that inspire you!

Fresh Paint
There’s nothing that excites me more than a fresh coat of paint. A room’s wall color dictates the personality of the space and the way we feel when we are in it. Also, a new paint color can create a huge impact without straining the checkbook. Expect to see more white walls in 2016 — it’s bright, fresh, and provides an excellent backdrop for any color.

Rearranging Furniture
Moving furniture might make you sweat, but it doesn’t cost a dime! Play around with the arrangement of your room. You might be shocked at the difference it can make. The new year is also a great time to evaluate what’s working and what’s not. If you’ve been tripping over a bench with sharp corners all year, find a new spot for it! Also, if you have unnecessary furniture or accessories in your space, try removing them to give yourself more room to breathe.

Small Remodeling Projects
A new kitchen backsplash, lighting fixture, or sink faucet can make the entire space feel as if it’s been updated. These projects don’t carry a huge price tag and they can add to the value of your home, while providing you with a more enjoyable living experience.

One New Piece of Furniture
If you don’t have the budget to refurnish an entire room, then replace only the “worst” piece of furniture in your room or home. (Or add a functional accent piece that will make you smile!) Use this as an opportunity to bring in something that you really love. Think fresh and fun!
